R&D and new innovations are much needed to improve sewage treatment capabilities and thus enhance the environmental health of our water resources and contributing towards sustainable development. R&D initiatives for the sewerage sector should lead to the realization of research findings to field applications for efficiency improvement, cost savings and/or potential revenue stream, environmentally sustainable services management in Malaysia. To execute this, industry players like IWK and similar organizations could concentrate on applied research activities that will provide practical solutions for immediate operational uptake and commercialization. For this, we encourage universities, research institutions and the beneficiaries to jointly develop local expertise in the areas of on-site sanitation unit, collection systems, sewage treatment technology, wastewater reuse, sludge management and reuse and energy efficiency.
